Worried That I Might Have Transmitted Herpes to Myself
If a guy touches a girls vagina with hsv then touches his penis will it spread to him with no genital to genital contact made?
Thank you for taking the time to submit this important question. I'm sure that many people will benefit from it.
This has been a topic of much debate recently but the facts are the facts and myths are just that...myths.
It's a fact that the herpes simplex virus cannot survive outside of the body for long periods of time but what has come into question recently is just how long is a "long period of time"?
There have been numerous studies regarding this topic and the vast majority of them say that virus will die within just a few seconds after it is exposed to ambient air. Meaning that you would not be able to catch the virus from most objects such as toilet seats, towels, etc.
The problems here is that phrase "ambient air". One particular study found that the virus can live outside of the body longer if the conditions outside of the body replicate the conditions inside of the body. Meaning that the virus will live longer on a wet/moist object with a temperature of 98 degrees or more. Don't quote me on this but I believe that the study showed that the virus managed to survive for about 4 minutes.
But to address your question specifically, there is a possibility for this to happen but the conditions would have to be nearly perfect. Your finger would have to come into contact with an active herpes blister and them almost immediately come into contact with your penis.
If you are really concerned about this then the best preventative measure that you should take is to not have sex while your partner is experiencing an active outbreak.
I know that sometimes our urges can get the best of us but avoiding sex during an active outbreak is absolutely the best way to avoid contracting the virus. Of course you can add more preventative measures such as wearing a condom and taking Valtrex and reduce your risk even more but avoiding sex during an outbreak offers the greatest amount of protection. Waiting a week or two isn't going to kill anybody.
Wishing you Success and Happiness!
