HSV 1 antibodies

by Joe

If I have Hsv 1 on my mouth, and someone with hsv 1 on their mouth gives me oral sex, can I still get the same strain on my genitals? Also, if someone has a cold sore, is it most likely hsv 1?

If someone already has oral HSV1 then acquiring it in the genitals is less likely due to the prior antibodies. Not impossible but very unlikely.

Excellent Questions About The Herpes Virus!
by: Ed

Thank you for taking the time to submit your question and Happy New Year!

Please keep in mind that I'm not a doctor nor do I pretend to be. You should seek out a thorough diagnosis of your condition from only qualified medial professionals.

With that being said, to answer your questions...Yes it is possible to transmit the HSV-1 virus to the genital area. If fact HSV-1 is the most common strain of the herpes virus in the genital herpes. Especially in young adults between 16 and 35.

The HSV-1 (Cold Sores) strain is the most popular strain of the virus among all people, and oral sex has become very popular over the past 20 years with more and more young adults having it. Unfortunately, it's popularity has also has it's consequences.

However, if you and your partner take the proper precautions, you can reduce the risk of transmitting it. But keep in mind that precautions ONLY reduce your risk...it doesn't eliminate it.

On to your second question.."if someone has a cold sore, is it most likely hsv 1?"

More than likely it is. The virus that causes genital herpes (HSV-2) is sensitive about where it can live and thrive. Although it can be spread to the mouth area, it's not as common as HSV-1. And even if it is spread, outbreaks are so mild that many people don't even know that they have it. And moreover, the possibility of multiple outbreaks is very low as compared to HSV-1 outbreaks in the mouth area.

And the same can be said about HSV-1 to a degree. Although it is easily spread to the genital area, the outbreaks are "generally" not nearly as bad as a true HSV-2 outbreak in the genital area.

I hope that I haven't totally confused you. Simply reply to this if you need more questions.

Wishing you success and Happiness in 2016!
