Donating Blood With Herpes

by Chell

Can I still donate blood now that I have herpes??

Thank you for submitting your EXCELLENT question! I've been wondering when this would be asked.

Yes you can! The herpes simplex virus lives in the nerves and will does not effect your ability to give blood.

You know, that was a misconception that I had for nearly 15 years. Up until I was diagnosed, I was proud that I had donated blood on a regular basis and I was so disappointed that little bit of charity was gone.

But I was wrong. And I was too ashamed to even attempt it for fear that after I completed the paperwork, the nurse would politely say, "I'm sorry but you can give blood because you have herpes."

It wasn't until I began to educate myself that I learned that the virus is not present in my blood system.

With this being said, don't be afraid. Donate until your heart's desire!

Wishing you Success and Happiness!

Is Is Really Safe To Donate Blood If You Have HSV?
by: Lynne Gordon

This is really news to me.

For years I have always thought that the only way the herpes virus can replicate itself is to invade your healthy uninfected red blood cells and force them to replicate the virus.

From my website:

"In the case of a herpes virus, initial interactions occur when a viral envelope glycoprotein (located inside the virus) called glycoprotein C (gC) binds to a cell surface particle called heparan sulfate."

The cell surface is the red blood cell.

This is why oxygen therapy works to prevent the herpes virus from reproducing because the higher the oxygen content in the blood, the less receptors there are for the virus to reproduce.

Please let me know if you have an update on this information.

None of us know everything about herpes, all we know is what we are told and we are only told enough from official sources to help us in choosing a pharmaceutical for 'managing' and 'living with' herpes and every other affliction that comes against the human body.

This is why I keep an open mind and am always ready to learn.

God Bless,
Lynne Gordon
